Social pressures are the influences of others and this often shapes how people think, behave, or present themselves to fit expectations from others or society.
For young girls, social pressures often show up early and can be intense because they come from many directions such as, family, school, media, and peers.
Common social pressure young girls can experience are -
• Appearance & beauty standards
• Pressure to be “pretty,” thin, or dress a certain way
• Comparing themselves to edited images on social media
• Popularity & fitting in
• Feeling the need to be liked, included, or chosen
Behaviour expectations
• Being told to be quiet, polite, or agreeable
• Discouragement from expressing anger or confidence
• Academic & achievement pressure
• Needing to be perfect, high-achieving, or “effortlessly smart”
• Gender roles
• Messages about what girls “should” like, wear, or become
• Online pressure
• Likes, followers, body comparison, cyberbullying
• Fear of being labeled
Social pressure will have many effects young girls these are a couple of examples-
• Lower self-esteem or body image issues
• Anxiety, people-pleasing, fear of making mistakes
• Silencing opinions or shrinking themselves
• Stress, burnout, or social withdrawal
Young girls will need support as they’re growing up and having someone to look up to and having someone to comfort them will ease this for this for them, you could also try and support young girls experience social pressure by doing these things -
• Teach media literacy:
Help them question unrealistic images and messages.
• Normalise imperfection: Praise effort, kindness, curiosity—not just looks or results.
• Encourage voice & boundaries: Let them say no and express opinions safely.
• Model confidence: Adults showing self-acceptance matters.
• Create safe spaces: Where mistakes and emotions are allowed.
• Celebrate diverse role models: Different bodies, cultures, talents, paths.
